At Star, we realize that there are times when a standard, off-the-shelf cylinder might not be available for your application. At Star, we have the capability to provide a customized cylinder to meet your needs. We do our best to use common components in order to keep costs and lead-times down and use custom components only when necessary. On the other hand, we have the capability to design and provide a totally custom cylinder from the ground up if that is required.

Our two basic designs are the tie-rod design and the round design. We can also provide both single-acting and double-acting cylinders. Based on functionality, reliability and costs; there are some specifications that work well with either design and some that are better tailored to a tie-rod or a round design. When we can use standard components with a custom stroke length, there is a lot set-up charge, a base cost and a cost per inch of stroke. The table below shows the range of customizable design parameters available and which design platform is most suitable. Some custom designs may need special port locations, thread types, special clevises, yokes or other special mounting requirements. We have a variety to choose from and can also provide special formed mounts for small volumes or have castings made for higher volume requirements. We also have the capability to provide cylinder components with different types of material and finishes. Our standard pneumatic cylinders are designed for best performance over a wide temperature range and for a heavy-duty work environment. For non-typical temperature ranges or work environments, we can provide a cylinder design with components that are tailored to that environment.
